St Edward’s College, although once very real, now has no physical existence. It lives
mainly in the minds and hearts of those whose gift it was to have been there. The
college was usually referred to as Cheswardine and sometimes affectionately as “Ches”
The English Juvenate of the Brothers of Christian Instruction was relocated here
on 15th September, 1950 and remained for the best part of two decades. It is largely
to the residents of that period that this site is devoted.
The boys and young men who attended St Edward’s experienced a glimpse of a way of
life that stayed with them long after they left. Some feel that the gifts
received in their formative years there, have stayed with them and sustained them
in the many and varied paths they have followed.
The Brothers who taught there followed the rule of their Founder, Jean Marie Robert
de La Mennais. He saw the need for teachers for the poor and disadvantaged. They
are spread throughout the world following his instructions.
We, who had the benefit of the education they provided, and a taste of the community
life they practised, share this site with each other, and remember many times in
one place - Cheswardine.
If you were a part of the St Edward’s community you are welcome to contribute your
memories to the site in text and/or in pictures. To contact contemporaries, there
is a private moderated mailing list which you can join.apply on the contacts
page.
THE PRESENT and THE FUTURE - The story of St Edward’s didn’t stop when we moved on. The gifts and talents we were born with, which the Cheswardine community cultivated, and the values we were taught to appreciate are with us still. How are we using ours? What are we gifting back? Will we leave a legacy? Can you see ways for this site to help in charitable community building? If you have a commitment to such a project would you like to share it in these pages? How old do you have to be? See what one of us has been up to - literally!!
